Don't think, just run.

At the sound of the first roar, Cecilia bolted out the front door. She was at least ten yards from Kori Mara's cottage when Tharo finally noticed she wasn't at his side, listening attentively to his interminable lecture. Behind her, he shouted, "Miss Cecilia! You must come back!" She ignored him and ran like hell.

A few seconds later, the second deafening roar ripped through the quiet like thunder. Her legs trembled with fear as she looked up. A red dragon soared overhead, its outstretched wings casting a deep shadow over the streets. Screams erupted from the city.

Instinctively, she ducked down a narrow side alley to watch. Was it hunting her? What the hell was she thinking? The red dragon headed toward the dark stone spires of the castle, but a black dragon intercepted it. The two dragons tussled amidst flames and sharp claws. Then a third dragon, this one a beautiful golden bronze, joined the fray, flanking the red one and steering it away from the city.

No time to be a spectator. She hiked her cloak up and ran south. She'd been worried that Emahn would sense her ulterior motives, but he'd seemed happy enough to answer her questions. Her apology had left her feeling disgusting. Kidnapping still far outranked manipulation on the shittiness scale, but it still didn't feel good.

After hours of touring the city, asking questions, she felt confident navigating the major landmarks of Blackstone. Here in the southern part of the city, there was a large temple with an outdoor chapel where she could hide. Most dragon cities weren't walled in, as she'd learned, since flight rendered walls somewhat pointless. After dark, she'd just walk out of the city without being bothered.

She'd meant for today's stroll to be a reconnaissance mission. But as she'd sat there listening to Tharo talk, barely noticing she was there as he waxed poetic about reincarnation, she realized she might never get this opportunity again.

And whether it was Nalaris or Emahn who came for her when everything hit the fan, she didn't want to be caught thinking I should have run when I had the chance. She hadn't had time to figure out a note, but she'd leave something with whoever was willing to take the amulet and get her to the Gate.

Terrible roars split through the sky as the dragons fought. Behind her, three more dragons rose from the city, heading to join the fight. Smoke billowed in a huge black cloud over the center of the city. She froze in the street, watching as a pair of dragons circled the smoke. A shower of rain began below the green dragon as if it had summoned a rainstorm around itself. The silver dragon with it whipped its wings around, and the smoke suddenly blew upward, with a curiously dome-like shape at the bottom, as if someone had scooped all the smoke into a clear bowl and was carrying it away.

For a moment, she was lost in wonder. This world was fascinating and so strange.
